The EDUC Youth Integration Labs (YIL) are dynamic events organized by the EDUC Alliance, designed to bring young Europeans together with key stakeholders from both public and private sectors. These gatherings provide a platform for participants to explore societal challenges through the "Science with and for Society" (SAPS) approach, while also facilitating collaboration between researchers and organizations working in fields of public interest.

Inaugural Event at University Paris Nanterre

The inaugural EDUC YIL was held at the University Paris Nanterre in April 2024, centering on crucial themes such as Diversity, Disability, and Gender Inequality. Over three days, the event welcomed 17 professionals from universities and associations, alongside 22 young participants from the alliance’s universities. Together, they engaged in rich cross-cultural exchanges aimed at fostering democratic participation and combating discrimination.

Voices of Inspiration

Participants shared overwhelmingly positive feedback. "I had the privilege of joining the first EDUC Youth Integration Lab at UPN, where I connected with inspiring young individuals from across Europe, all driven by the desire to challenge societal views on discrimination," shared Héloïse Chappaz, Secretary at the Disability and Accessibility Department at UPN. "Though my role was initially to support a foreign student with a disability, I found myself fully immersed in the diverse discussions, presentations, and interactive moments. The YIL was a memorable experience, equipping me with practical tools and knowledge for organizing workshops on often overlooked issues in France and Europe. These three days not only deepened my understanding of disability and discrimination, but also infused me with a positive, empowering energy thanks to the vibrant participation of everyone involved."

Bendegúz Pisch, a visually impaired student from the University of Pécs, echoed this sentiment: "The concept and theme of UPN's EDUC YIL were both fascinating and incredibly relevant. I believe it's crucial to create more spaces for dialogue about the inclusion and awareness of people with disabilities or special needs in European higher education. YIL introduced me to fresh perspectives on different forms of disabilities and provided insight into the accessibility initiatives being undertaken by EDUC partner universities."

Fabienne Donau, representing the University of Potsdam, brought a dual perspective to the Lab as both a staff member from the Coordination Office for Equal Opportunities and the Deputy Central Gender Equality Commissioner. "What stood out most to me was the opportunity to connect with so many knowledgeable and passionate individuals. The experience of discussing issues of equality with students committed to activism was incredibly enriching. I also gained valuable insights into how discrimination is addressed across different European countries and how participatory scientific approaches can make a difference," she reflected. "One takeaway that particularly resonated with me was the phrase 'Knowledge is everywhere.' This sentiment captured the essence of the entire YIL— students and experts shared complementary skills, creating a truly collaborative learning environment. The Lab not only fostered understanding but also sparked future collaborations. In fact, just two months after the YIL, our team visited the University of Cagliari to exchange ideas and best practices on promoting equality in our institutions."

Continuing the Dialogue

The first edition of the EDUC Youth Integration Lab has clearly left a lasting impact on its participants, sparking ongoing dialogue, collaboration, and commitment to addressing critical societal issues. We extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone involved and warmly invite professionals and students alike to join us in future editions:

  • Active Citizenship in Underprivileged Groups at the University of Pécs (April 2025)
  • Empowering Youth through Education at the University of Cagliari (Fall semester 2025)
  • Diversity, Disability, and Gender Inequalities at the University Jaume I (Spring semester 2026)
  • How Artificial Are We? at Masaryk University (Fall semester 2026)

Each of these upcoming YILs promise to continue fostering meaningful discussions, building connections, and inspiring action across Europe.
