The recent Meeting of Directors-General for Higher Education, held on October 17-18, 2024, in Budapest, Hungary, marked a significant moment in the context of the Hungarian presidency of the Council of the EU. This pivotal event, taking place during Hungary’s leadership, provided a unique platform for discussing pressing issues in European higher education and fostering collaboration among member states.

Under Hungary’s presidency, the focus was on the strategic partnership framework, aligning with the overarching goals of the European Education Area and enhancing cooperation in education and training. This leadership role allowed Hungary to influence key discussions and drive forward initiatives aimed at strengthening the European higher education landscape. The workshops during the event focused on the European degree package and strategies for its realisation. Participants explored the significance and added value of the European quality assurance and recognition system, as well as the potential for increased recognition of career development for academic staff.

A notable highlight was the presentation by Prof. Dr. István Tarrósy, who introduced the EDUC alliance. His insights on strategic alliance formation and enhancing global positions underscored Hungary’s commitment to fostering partnerships that elevate the quality and reach of higher education across Europe.

On the second day of the event, the Directors General continued their policy discussions about the renewal of financing and governance models in higher education. They also talked about policy planning solutions to address negative demographic trends and indicated the importance of the third mission of higher education institutions.
